After Donald Trump expressed his willingness to sign a free trade agreement with Argentina, Elon Musk, a key figure in the Republican administration, endorsed the initiative, stating that it “would be great.”
On his social media account X (formerly known as Twitter), Musk responded to a user who had reported: “President Trump says he will consider a free trade agreement with Argentina.”
“That would be great,” Musk replied. The billionaire has met multiple times with Argentine President Javier Milei and has openly supported the policies implemented in the South American country.
A New Free Trade Agreement on the Horizon?
Trump’s statement about considering a free trade agreement with Argentina highlights his recognition of Milei’s leadership. During an event at the White House, Trump stated, “I would consider anything. I think he’s a great leader. He’s doing a great job, a fantastic job. He has resurrected the country from oblivion.”
This announcement comes amid a reconfiguration of U.S. trade relations under Trump’s administration, characterized by the imposition of tariffs on countries such as Mexico and Canada. The openness toward a possible agreement with Argentina represents an opportunity to strengthen commercial ties between the two nations.
Argentina’s Interest in Strengthening U.S. Relations
President Milei has expressed his interest in deepening commercial relations with the United States, seeking agreements that boost Argentina’s economic growth. Trump’s consideration of negotiating a free trade agreement could be a significant step in that direction.
Despite Trump’s expressed willingness, formal negotiations for a free trade agreement between the U.S. and Argentina have not yet begun. In the coming months, both governments are expected to explore this possibility and assess the potential benefits of a treaty that promotes trade and investment between the two nations.
